More footnotes on the elemental archetypes below, including some on earth types now. :)
On wood types:
Wood types aren't generally the sort you'll just find just hanging out doing nothing unless something is seriously wrong. Even then, you're more likely to find them engrossed in an unhealthy coping mechanism like alcoholism or cutting or at the very least wandering restlessly about. If you want to attract the attention of a wood type, you need to interrupt them. But again, because of the single-mindedness that sometimes befalls woods, this can be much easier said than done. (For any of you who have seen the Austin Powers movie, the part in which Austin wedges his golf cart in the narrow tunnel and spends the greater part of an hour focused intently on turning it around through tiny movements forward and backwards is typical of a Wood-type "blockhead" moment)
On earth types:
Earth types tend to like doing things in an old fashioned manner similar to water and metal types; yet while in water types this is due to indifference and in metal types this is due to a reverence of tradition, in earth types this is generally due to a great distaste for rocking the boat or burning bridges. This can sometimes go to such extremes that earth types can seem cowardly or with no real opinions of their own in the eyes of their more agressive bretheren. This can come as a disadvantage when they come under the eye of wood types, whose forcefulness can sometimes overwhelm them. In contrast however, Earth types' "managerial finesse" is one of the few things that can get indifferent water types to work with anyone on anything. When backed by metal types to avoid the control of woods, they make wonderful government officials and administrators.
On fire types:
No matter how revolutionary and groundbreaking an innovation may seem to others, when pitched to a water type it usually fizzles out and dies.
Because of tis fire types tend to feel very uncomfortable around water types, because they are very good at being "buzz killers".

The rest has been the results of my own research and the internet, filtered through my understanding of TCM and my bullshit detector. :) (For instance, while a wonderful place to start, Between Heaven and Earth does a really terrible job at describing Water types) I don't have the Chinese know-how to track down and read the original Chinese sources.
Here's some links. Don't forget to filter them through your understanding of TCM and your bullshit detector. There's a lot of misinformation out there, unfortunately.
